KAMA-ASA's Magewappa Ohitsu
Product Features
The final touch to cooked rice
Wooden rice containers absorb the moisture from the rice just right, keeping the rice delicious. They also help to cool the rice down, bringing out the rice's sweetness.
It is recommended for people who usually cook rice on the stove, as well as those who cook rice in a rice cooker.
Kamaasa's Kuruwa ohitsu is an ohitsu made using bent wood techniques.
It is a tool that combines the best features of both bento boxes and rice containers.
Maruya Manufacturing
Each item is carefully crafted by craftsman Kensuke Yasue of Maruya Seisakusho, which has been in business since 1953 in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture. Maruya Seisakusho is the number one producer of domestically produced steamers in Japan, and these steamers are made with the high level of skill that has been cultivated there.
Five special features of Kamaasa's Kuruwa Ohitsu
Carefully Selected Ingredients
The sides are made of domestic Kiso and Tono cypress, and the bark of wild cherry is used for the fastenings. The bottom board is fitted with Tono sawara wood, which has excellent water absorption properties.
Can also be used in the microwave
Since it does not use any metal parts, it can be used in the microwave and refrigerator, so you can enjoy delicious rice anytime.
Two-layer structure
The curved part is made of two layers, making it excellent at retaining moisture and regulating humidity.
Deep type
It is deeper than the previous model, which allows us to offer it in 3 and 5 cup sizes, which we believe are the most user-friendly.
Bottom footing
By applying a process called ashiguri to the bottom, it is more difficult for moisture to accumulate at the bottom.

Regarding product quality
- About Cracking This product is made from natural wood and bamboo, and is handcrafted by artisans one by one. The fastening parts are bound together by cutting into the wood fibres with a tool called a "wood sashi". For this reason, depending on the position of the wood grain and the direction of the wood fibres, it is inevitable that cracks may occur in the fastening parts. Furthermore, cracks may appear due to thermal expansion as you use the product.
- About roughness : Due to the processing machines and manufacturing process, some processed surfaces may be fuzzy or rough. None of these will interfere with the use of the products as cooking utensils, so we ask for your understanding.
-
Regarding the nature of wood and individual differences : The following differences may occur. We ask for your understanding as these are characteristics of products made from natural materials.
・Differences in color and wood grain ・Slight size differences and distortions ・Gaps in overlapping bent boards that do not interfere with use ・Peeling or fraying of the surface of the blinds ・Stains or spots
Before first use
- Add rice water to the inside of the rice cooker and leave it to soak for 1 to 2 hours.
This gives off a unique fragrance.
Care Instructions
-
Washing
We recommend washing with a scrubbing pad and water only, avoiding the use of detergent wherever possible.
Natural wood contains a lot of oil, which maintains the quality of the wood. Please avoid using detergents as much as possible, as they will break down the oil. Also, please do not use dishwashers or bleach. Please be careful not to scrub too hard, as this may cause splinters. -
Dry
Leaving it wet can cause mold and other problems, so after washing, wipe off the water with a clean cloth and dry in a well-ventilated place out of direct sunlight.
You can also dry it in the microwave, but be careful not to leave it in for too long (approximately 2 minutes at 600W).
In either case, spraying the entire surface with rubbing alcohol (ethanol) and then letting it dry will help prevent mold and darkening (avoid applying it directly as it will cause stains). This is especially recommended during humid times such as the rainy season.
When drying, please separate the lid and the container. If you leave the lid on, the inside will not dry. - Storage
Do not put in a plastic bag, etc., and store in a well-ventilated place out of direct sunlight. The more frequently you use it, the less likely it will become deformed or moldy. If it is not used for a long period of time, it is more likely to become deformed or moldy due to drying.
Troubleshooting
-
It's getting black...
Discoloration may occur depending on the water quality in the area where you use it. Generally, there is no problem with using it as is. If you are concerned about the discoloration, rubbing it with a slice of lemon may improve the color. -
Is it okay to use in the microwave?
Yes, you can use it because it does not contain metal. However, please note that if you put it in for too long, the wood will dry out too much. As a guideline, we recommend using it for no more than 2 minutes at 600W, but this varies depending on the model, so please adjust it yourself. -
Is it okay not to use detergent?
If you thoroughly remove dirt with water and a scrubbing brush, then spray with alcohol, it will be sufficiently disinfected and there should be no problem. If you are concerned about stickiness due to putting in oily foods such as cooked rice, we recommend using a powder cleanser. Powder cleansers contain a low amount of surfactants (about 3%), so they are less harsh on the wood and remove dirt thoroughly, so they are recommended. -
Cracks have started...
This may occur when you first start using the product, but the wood will split, creating a gap that allows it to expand and contract, and in most cases the crack will not progress and you will be able to continue using the product as is.
Please understand that this is a natural product characteristic that occurs during the manufacturing process. It does not affect the quality of the product, so please use it with confidence.
