KAMA-ASA’s Japanese Style Steamer
Product Features
Keeps steam tightly
This is one of the few Japanese steamers made from Japanese cypress and bamboo. It is deep and can be used to steam any food.
By tightly covering the steamer with a wooden lid, more steam can be trapped inside, making it an excellent match for mochi rice cakes, red rice, and other glutinous rice dishes.
Because of its compact size, it is also recommended for steaming small amounts of vegetables.
A reliable maker
Shimizu Magemono Workshop
Founded in 2021, the workshop produces lunch boxes, steamers, and other items, led by bending craftsman Takayasu Shimizu. Each item is carefully made by hand, and the new workshop will be responsible for the future of manufacturing.
Three special features of Kamaasa's mini Japanese steamer
Finished with traditional techniques
Each piece is carefully crafted using a technique called "magemono," which involves bending a single thin sheet of wood.
Carefully Selected Ingredients
The main body is made of domestic cypress, and the fastening material is wild cherry bark.
This rare domestic wood is not only durable, but also has excellent moisture-regulating properties, resulting in just the right amount of steam.

Notes
- When using a steamer, be careful of the amount of water in the pot so that it does not boil dry.
- Please be careful with the heat as the steamer may burn.
- When steaming oily foods, laying a bamboo steamer sheet or vegetable sheet underneath will help prevent the steamer from getting dirty.
- Do not use dishwashers or dryers.
- Avoid storing it in a plastic bag or while it is wet. It dislikes moisture so store it in a well-ventilated place.
Regarding product quality
- About Cracking This product is made from natural wood and bamboo, and is handcrafted by artisans one by one. The fastening parts are bound together by cutting into the wood fibres with a tool called a "wood sashi". For this reason, depending on the position of the wood grain and the direction of the wood fibres, it is inevitable that cracks may occur in the boards at the fastening parts. Furthermore, cracks may appear due to thermal expansion as you use the product.
- About roughness : Due to the processing machines and manufacturing process, some processed surfaces may have fuzz or roughness. None of these will interfere with the use of the products as cooking utensils, so we ask for your understanding.
-
Regarding the nature of wood and individual differences : The following differences may occur. Please understand that these are characteristics of products made from natural materials.
・Differences in color and wood grain ・Slight size differences and distortions ・Gaps in overlapping bent boards that do not interfere with use ・Peeling or fraying of the surface of the blinds ・Stains or spots
Before first use
- There is no problem using it as is, but if you are concerned about the smell, try steaming it empty (without adding any ingredients) for about 10 minutes.
Care Instructions
- Basically, you can leave it as it is without washing it after use.
- If dirt is noticeable, wipe it off with a tightly wrung cloth. Avoid using detergent as much as possible.
Troubleshooting
-
It's getting black...
Discoloration may occur depending on the water quality in the area where you use it. Generally, there is no problem with using it as is. If you are concerned about the discoloration, rubbing it with a slice of lemon may improve the color. -
Cracks have started...
This may occur when you first start using the product, but the wood will split, creating a gap that allows it to expand and contract, and in most cases the crack will not progress and you will be able to continue using the product as is.
Please understand that this is a natural product characteristic that occurs during the manufacturing process. It does not affect the quality of the product, so please use it with confidence.
